New 12V2000 M96Z provides increased power density and is aimed at fast yachts, patrol, police and sportfishing boats
A new 12-cylinder version of Rolls-Royce’s high-speed, four-stroke MTU Series 2000 engine will provide 11% more power output than a previous model.
Available in 2026, Rolls-Royce Power Systems’ 12V2000 M96Z is aimed at fast yachts, patrol, police and sportfishing boats. The enginemaker said the increased power density was made possible by further developing various components. As a result, Rolls-Royce has increased the power output from 1,472 kW to 1,634 kW.
Rolls-Royce said the new model has “only minor changes in weight and dimensions” compared to the previous 12V 2000 M96X model.
The 12V 2000 M96X, which produces 1,472 kW at 2,450 rpm, has a ZF 3050 gearbox standard, with a length of 2,667 mm, width of 1,293 mm and height of 1,414 mm and a dry mass weight of 3,510 kg.
“The new 12-cylinder version of the MTU Series 2000 engines stands for maximum performance, increased power density, and impressive acceleration – another milestone in our commitment to providing our customers with first-class propulsion solutions for demanding maritime applications,” said Rolls-Royce Power Systems chief executive, Jörg Stratmann.
The engine’s advanced turbocharger system delivers powerful acceleration at low exhaust emissions, which is an important characteristic for many operators of yachts and other fast vessels. A reinforced crankcase, strengthened cylinder heads, and new pistons ensure the reliability and durability of the engine, said Rolls-Royce.
Like other MTU yacht engines, the new 12V2000 M96Z version is approved for use with hydrotreated vegetable oil renewable diesel. Certification according to IMO II and EPA Tier 3 recreational is also available.
Rolls-Royce Power Systems senior vice president, global marine, Denise Kurtulus said the introduction of the 12V2000 M96Z expands the enginemaker’s “leading position in the international yacht market with its bridge-to-propeller strategy and its premium brand MTU.”
