Technologies enabling the next generation of sustainable, autonomous and connected vessels across Europe will be trialled under a three-year development project
A European research and development project aims to integrate digital, online and mobility technologies over the maritime and ports sector on the continent.
Academies, digitalisation providers and smart maritime integrators will partner with a classification society, a major European port and vessel operators to field test several technologies in the WAterborne fedeRated systems and models for secuRe and resilieNT (WARRaNT) project. This European Union-funded initiative bringing together 14 leading organisations from eight countries across Europe in a strategic three-year mission.
It will investigate integrating artificial intelligence (AI), digital twins, cyber security and smart mobility systems, to support the next generation of sustainable, autonomous and connected vessels across Europe. Project partners seek to make digitalised vessels not just smarter, but also safer, more secure and resilient.
Inlecom Group is the project co-ordinator and will lead with digitalisation strategies and resilience frameworks, while Norway’s SINTEF will lead on cyber security assurance, training, and standardising waterborne digital systems.
DNV will provide risk assurance, classification and certification expertise, while Port of Antwerp-Bruges, in Belgium, is an associated partner trialling port-ship communications and cyber resilience.
Danaos Shipping in Cyprus will lead lab testing digital container ship operations, Aeler in Switzerland will lead the lab for trialling smart container systems, while Seafar, Belgium, will test dependable remote operations, and DST in Germany will trial autonomous green vessels.
They will be supported by Konnecta and NTUA in Greece for digital twins, AI and risk analysis, TU Delft in the Netherlands on developing autonomous marine vessels systems and operations, VLTN in Belgium for stakeholder modelling and adoption-pathway simulations, and Techalia in Spain for cyber security and privacy-enhancing technologies.
“WARRaNT is more than a research project, it is a strategic partnership to shape the digital backbone of Europe’s future maritime industry,” said Inlecom Group senior project manager Georgia Tsiochantari.
She said WARRaNT will use funding from the Horizon Europe programme to help future-proof Europe’s maritime sector by addressing the complex safety, cyber security and operational risks posed by increased automation, AI, and connectivity at sea. It will focus on developing and testing smart containers and ships, autonomous low-emissions vessels and ship remote control, all trialled under cyber-secure communications.
Training programmes and workshops will be developed, along with a data-sharing platform to support risk-based design, simulations, certifications and assurance.
Riviera’s Cyber & Vessel Security Webinar Week will be held from 1 July 2025 focusing on the latest developments in cyber and vessel security. Use this link for more information and sign up to the webinars.
